THE TASK
Situated on the edge of the Naabauen, next to horse pastures, this steeply sloping, south-west facing property is located on the local beach of a small rural community. The building task was to create a residential development with bright, spacious living and recreation rooms and yet sufficient privacy. It was desired that the planned building volume of the single-family dwelling, despite its size, should fit harmoniously and also restrainedly into the surrounding structure and natural space. The building volume was to contain essential features of the regional, historic architectural style – such as gable roof, no roof overhangs,
the choice of materials – but these interpreted in a contemporary way, with clear and sharp-edged lines. The clients wanted a modern, but at the same time timeless design – not following any short-lived trend.

THE IDEA
During the architectural and content-related examination of the building task and, above all, the location, the idea developed for a hillside house solution following the natural course of the terrain in split-level construction and a lower-lying courtyard situation along the access road. The entrance floor, the flat-roofed extension in the courtyard, contains a checkroom area, guest toilet and office, as well as ancillary rooms and a garage. This part of the house has a basement and houses storage rooms, workshop and technical rooms in the basement. The main residential building with gable roof develops half a floor downhill with spacious common areas for living, dining and cooking. The upper floor of the main residential building houses the private rooms of the builders. The facades remain closed to the access road and open up laterally only selectively to accommodate certain references. To the Naabauen, on the not visible south-west side,
the facade of the main residential building opens completely on both floors. The new building blends in with the neighboring buildings, which already include larger and taller structures. In the overall picture, the new building tends to subordinate itself. Through its form, choice of materials and the design of the outdoor facilities with regional granite and native greenery, there is a consistent, harmonious embedding in the site and the surrounding nature.

THE MATERIALS
The solid base construction of concrete and brick is clad with curtain wall systems. In the area of the substructure, the rear-ventilated curtain walls offer the possibility to accommodate installations for sun protection, drainage and technology “invisibly” and outside the insulated building envelope.
The material concept is based on a new use of the historic materials brick, natural stone, metal and glass, and is thus also intended to establish a link to the history of the site and the region – a large timber industry, mining of iron ore and regional granite quarries.

THE PRODUCT
The realized metal facade Planum 32 in RAL 7021 of the company DOMICO – originally from the industrial building – could convince by a flexible design possibility, a surface with a velvety-matt effect in your haptics and the dark color. The possibility of being able to develop large-format elements in various widths, in a wild formation, even over-corner, excited both planners and builders. The cooperation with the
The cooperation with the manufacturer, the responsible regional representative and the regional specialist company was positive and goal-oriented from the time of the design – especially in order to ensure a smooth process and to find an economical solution for the use of the product, which was new at that time.
The very precise workmanship resulted in a special sharpness and clear lines, which contrasts with the rough wood cladding of the base areas, the generous glass surfaces of the frameless window elements, the regional granite in the outdoor areas and the surrounding greenery: roughness, mattness and gloss – solidity and transparency.
